Ithemba’s primary function is to assist people with addiction problems who are seeking recovery and assistance in being able to integrate into and contribute meaningfully, to the societies in which they live. Ithemba also aims to assist the families and communities affected by the results of addiction. Our approach is holistic, to address not just the person’s immediate addiction, but to provide psychological and life skills and empower them to lead a fulfilling and productive life.
Our approach to assisting the affected persons is step-wise:
The first step is pre-rehabilitation: this aims to provide immediate safety or a sober space for those people who do not have the resources to provide themselves with one.
Ithemba assists with placement in temporary homeless shelters or similar places of safety, as we have existing relationships with various shelters around the city of Johannesburg.
The second step is initiated when the affected person is willing to commit to beginning the recovery process. Ithemba assists with placement into a government funded or private treatment facility. We will assist the person with obtaining ID documentation, medical certificates, and affidavits where needed, and will ensure that the required psychosocial reports are completed with a trusted social worker.
All persons entering a rehabilitation facility will be provided with basic toiletries and clothing.
Persons willing, can continue for an extended period in the recovery facility (pending feedback from the facility), or enter secondary care in a halfway house, where they can stay for a maximum of twelve months.
During this stay we will continue to ensure that there is an ongoing commitment to both sobriety, and recovery. Persons in the house will undergo life and vocational skills training and will be assisted in rejoining the workforce or pursuing further education.
We aim to empower people to return to their homes and communities and to continue contributing positively once there. In order to make this project as successful and far-reaching as possible, we are presently seeking partnerships and funding from those looking to assist social upliftment and empowerment of persons and communities
